im about to be real honest about this show bc i know its everyones fave but the number one reason i couldnt stand it after episode 1 was bc of this girl

But let’s not forget the author of Song of Ice and Fire is a certified neckbeard who took the route of recreating a pseudo-Eurocentric universe in which white people are the focal point and brown folks are the savages and deviants across the sea.

But you know…I thought avid readers of sci-fi/fantasy knew this already. Like…why are we even acting surprised?

…where have you been the last fifty years of sci-fi/fantasy? Damn near every fucking fantasy novel is based in some alternate version of Europe or is heavily based on Eurocentric themes. Even in sci-fi, the future is based off of a white-washed vision of either dystopia or space opera type shit.

Like…why. Are. We. Still. Surprised. This. Happens.

Just to point something out:

In this scene the people are calling her mother because she freed them. She wagered this big thing and the biggest part of the contract was setting all of the people in this village free. In the first season she is disgusted by the treatment of women and refuses to have slaves so she treats her handmaidens as sisters by sharing what she has. She stands up against the rape and killing of women when her husband’s clan starts raiding towns and works toward the acceptance of different languages and customs in her clan. When her husband dies she becomes the first female leader of the clan, a big huge no no in the mystical barbaric hunting tribes handbook.

Another note: She was smuggled out from her country by her brother, was raised to be a prize or trophy to be traded to secure her brother’s victory, and had an arranged marriage to a nomad clan of hunters by her brother. She is naive because she was never seen as a women or as a human for that matter- she was a pawn and is finally claiming her power and is trying to do the best she can with it. Compared to the other POV characters her storyline is not the strongest one in the books since she just roams around setting slaves free and being the first female leader but she has the last living dragons which are play a huge role in defending their whole world.

…so yea…her character and Arya are the only characters that Im like YEA GIRL GET ‘EM FIGHT ‘EM GET THAT THRONE which isnt saying much since every other character is super duper flawed….

That’s all fine and dandy, and i’m glad she’s a good female character and all that, but the point of the commentary above was that it’s a damn shame that in a show so popular and (from what i hear) groundbreaking the POC actors are STILL reduced to slaves, savages, deviants, and the like. Like this is probably the largest concentration of POCs on screen at once and theyre pictured worshiping/bowing at (for all intents and purposes) a white person. Like its annoying that POCs still arent given a fair shot to be main characters in fantasy/sci-fi/whatever media. It has nothing to do with that character specifically.

OH ITS A POC THING MY BAD. Okay. I guess I first read it as an attack on something else- Yes, agreed, POC arent given a fair shot in fantasy thingys.

I guess my only response is perspective with stuff like this-authors and the audience have yet to recognize that as an issue which is horrible but through responses and critiques to this franchise, which is crazy big and the first of its kind, there can be fully developed POC main characters and not just background or a token/filler characters in the future.

Looking at Grad programs cuz, yea know, a 100+ min nail biting game wasnt enough excitement for one...

Just kidding, guys. These birds are just trolling the hell out of ants. I really, really wanted to show you this clip of a Galapagos finch or something harassing the shit out of formica ants and then being all “Yes, yes, bathe me in your fury! Your chemical defenses are now my own! Mwahahahaha!”, but the closest thing I could find is this video of David Attenborough pissing off some wood ants. It was basically like that, only instead of an Englishman with a stick, it was a bird stomping around with its wings spread just being an absolute asshole about everything.

This behavior is actually called anting, and there are two types of anting that birds can engage in. One is just anting, where birds will rub ants all over themselves to get that precious, precious formic acid all up in their feathers. They’ll also do it with mothballs, cigarette butts, and certain sorts of beetles and millipedes. The other one is passive anting, where a particularly lazy bird will find an anthill and just flop down on it with all their feathers spread and puffed and annoy the ants until they hop to and try to make them leave, at which point the bird rubs its wings together and goes “Yeeeeeess.”

They do this to get rid of external parasites, because external parasites are annoying. Ant-eating birds who do this are getting a two-for deal out of it, because they get the ants to empty their acid sacs in a beneficial location (the bird’s feathers) and then get to eat them without having to deal with the acid in their crops, so it’s basically like if your bug-spray or deoderant came in a bacon bottle.

Formica ants get the brunt of this, because they’re super-common and quite frequently spray the acid instead of trying to inject it, so the bird can get itself doused and then preen it into its feathers. Considering the spraying of acid is like the ant way of saying “Oh my god go away you dickhead I hate you we all hate you why are you still here jesus christ what is wrong with you,” we can be reasonably sure that they’re not super-thrilled by this bird behavior. Since the birds keep doing it, we can be reasonably sure that they don’t care about the ants’ feelings.

Birds are the actual best thing.
